if you do want to give dungeon keeper a go again, get hold of keeperfx. It is a windowsish port, it's more stable than the standard on later versions of windows and supports higher resolutions to make things a bit prettier

i tried to build a pineapple under the sea, however it doesn't look as good as i'd hoped and as it turns out, the sea isn't deep enough to accommodate one

Re: The video game thread
turns out atom zombie smasher is shit too, what is it with games i've been looking forward to lately?
atom zombie smasher really needs to figure out what it wants to be, a tactical zombie outbreak game or an arcadey puzzler. it tries to be both and so fails at being either.
as a tactical game it could be good, you're tasked with rescuing civilians as zombies attack and have a large area map where you can choose where to save, but the overhead map is so underdeveloped there is no room for strategy. you fly to each territory and thats it, there is no room for cutting the zombie hordes off, forcing them through a chokepoint, or even owning all four railroads, you just choose your difficulty and away you go.
If you fail to resuce enough civilians it makes you replay the level until you do, which is completely insane for a tactical game, imagine playing a game from the total war series where you're expected to win every battle.
It also doesn't have a mechanic in place for who you what tools you want at your disposal. it simply gives you a random selection of what you've unlocked which leads to some unwinnable situations, and you don't even know it until the round has started. I was tasked with killing 150 zombies with 3 landmines and 2 barricades earlier.
If there was no random element in place , it could instead have made quite a good puzzle game, the levels could be constructed around saving as many people with as few resources as possible, but due to everything being randomly generated, you're left with unsolvable puzzles.

Re: The video game thread
apologies, but we've gone back until the most recent backup.
the map is now exactly as it was in the most recent google maps.
i think i lost my butt-ugly pineapple and ric lost some of his ark progress, but that should be it.

I've not been able to get on for the last week on the count of me being away from home.
I've just heard about a browser based Battlestar galactica game, that could be fun.

Re: The video game thread
oh, and you can now warp to the nether by the usual method, but its buggy as hell still. the portal in steve's castle doesn't have a matching portal on the other side and so at present there is no way back out of the nether.
also the first time i went through it, it spawned me on the ground by lava and i had to admin back, the second time i went in armed with a flint and steel and obsidian to make a matching gate it spawned me well above the ground and i fell to my death. i'd advise against using them at the moment, although perhaps if we makea new portal, it'll map on the otherside properly

Re: The video game thread
there are 3 types of blocks, netherrack, which burns forever if lit (you know about that one) soul-sand, which makes you slower when you walk over it, and glowstone, which is a light source block.
Theres also ghasts, which are hella big monsters that fire fireballs and zombie pigmen which are friendly towards you unless you attack one.
Read about it more here
