Despite the fact that the girl in question was clearly dimmer than....Dimmers, the Daily Mail (as usual) are focusing entirely on the wrong aspect of the story.

The operator at the end of the phone should certainly have clarified what the girl wanted. Cab is a well recognised term for a taxi, and the error in my opinion is entirely the directory enquiry operator's fault.

If it had been an American tourist using the term cab in that situation, and not a 'youth' that speaks 'like Ali G', the story would've been given an entirely different spin.

the exchange as written in the article is completely logical and i'd likely have come to the same conclusion, you wouldn't give a taxi a name like joe baxi, but i can imagine ikea calling a cabinet that.

Yes, ok, asking for a 'cab, innit' could be misunderstood, but there was other dialogue involved. Were I working as a phone operator i'd clarify what my customer wanted before putting them through to somebody that sells cabinets or provides taxis. It's not as if the word "innit" hasn't become widely used in the modern English language.

It's a stupid story, and everyone involved has reached a new personal level of idiocy, but the Mail have focused entirely on the teenage girl.

the compleataly literate and well schooled youth in question was beeing a dick, the operater probably did this to piss them off more than anything.
