As for the whole MidlandsDan thing, i try to avoid using gay to mean bad, although i do think it's acceptable to refer to someone as gay as a derogatory term. Now that I think about it, it's possibly just down to my grammar nazi attitude than a sense of empathy

because in that case it's how the term is inferred. mocking people's sexuality is fun, and a good way to get at their insecurities.
calling a lamp gay because the bulb went in it is misuse of the term, it is in no way behaving in a gay way.
As far as that is concerned however, i don't comment when other people do use gay in a way I don't like. Each to their own.

I don't really see how its 'fun'...anyway as for the way its inferred, you can't control the impact of your words, it may seem irrelevant but its all these little trickles that lead to streams that lead eventually to a raging river of intolerence, violence and fear.

To give an example from elsewhere...remember in primary school how we used 'gay' as an insult...some people carried that fear of being seen as gay with them, together with their insecurites (I know you say that your use of the word is against such insecurities and I don't dispute that, but it still has this other trickledown effect in my opinion) into adulthood, leading to 'queerbashing' etc.

Also please consider that what may seem harmless fun to you, others may be sensitive depending on their own personal history...similar to how racial epithets can cause a lot of pain for some whilst for others its about 'showing a good sense of humour' to tolerate them.

Anyway thats my opinion, I'm not trying to criticise anyone but its not like I ain't got my reasons, some of which you see above.

I think it's all shit and you're gay.

Words meanings change over time, gay never meant homosexual to begin with so i'm reclaiming it for the straight man.

kids also refer to boys as being girls but it hasn't made me grow up into a woman hater.

i agree with what you're saying but theres a difference between what i know is right and what i do, i call feltch gay all of the time and he loves it.

I'm not saying such things affect everyone...also many men do still fear being seen as having 'feminine' characteristics...which contributes to sexism also.

But between friends we know the score, when you say it about something random or whatever, the impact is different...which is kind of my original point really...I know for a fact that a lot of people use 'gay' or 'fag' as a synonym for 'poor' or 'weak,' without really thinking about it.

In all seriousness though, I didn't really pay any attention to Dan's opinion until Rich wisely put the racial spin on Lee's comment. I think Dan is right but still, poking fun at people is what makes the world go round.

If people went round worrying about what people think about what they're saying, nothing would ever get said.

Aye, I've got a bedroom that's clutter- free know!! it's amazing. I reckon I could fit at least another 15 people in here, nae bither!!

    [rage]

Anyway, I'm transferring uni's right, which is the biggest hassle in the world. I had meningitis in December and the new uni have got to pass me as medically fit before they take on me board to practice, which is fair enough as if they enrol me if I'm not fit to practice then it's against the law. SO, I've had to go through sooo many things and interviews with loads of different people to declare myself healthy (How many days did you have off sick, What were you're symptoms, has it affected you in any way....blah) and THEN I get a letter saying that Glasgow Uni don't finalise their year results until 9th Sept, and I'm supposed to start in Aberdeen on the 21st, so Deen are fretting that it's not enough time and now they don't know if I will have passed the year officially or some balls so they don't know if they can enrol me again. So I am mega chuffing angry because my ex-uni can't get it's ass together. ACTUAL RAGE!

Surely that can be sorted out with a few strong words with your old uni? If you just say that your next place relies on them pulling their fingers out (in nicer words) then they'll understand. Don't wait for them to sort it. Keep phoning every day, twice a day, until they do it.
