A question regarding sax reeds... Empty A question regarding sax reeds...

Post by Parg Wed May 13, 2009 7:09 pm

So currently I use the black plasticover reeds for my sax but I'm thinking of getting a solid plastic one. I've looked around the internets a little bit and they're over £10 each, so I wanna know what they're like before I invest in one (I'm thinking what's the sound like, how easy are they to play etc.)

tl:dr - What are solid plastic sax reeds like?

haha.. well the only person i've met who played on plastic reeds was an oboist... and on oboe it was definitely a bad idea! But then sax is pretty much completely differrent, so that's still no help.

I just use vandoren cane ones though tbh...

I've always used Rico reeds (advised by my teacher). What are Vandoren ones like? Is there actually any difference between reed makes or is it all shenanigans?

yeah, i much prefer vandorens.. find them a bit more mellow than rico, and easier to make a nice sound on Smile

Ah. I don't like the more mellow sound myself. The plasticover ones are a bit more sharper than normal so I usually use those.

Go play it then, fool. Is it a tenor or alto? Or a bari?! They're awesome

its a tenor... i have an alto too but i should sell that really.. always play tenor if i'm feeling saxy lol

i will!.., once disseration/exams are done with... doubt my revising housemates would appreciate it right now. plus i have an exam/recital thing in 2 weeks on oboe, so should probs not play sax til after that

..and yes, baris are beasts Very Happy

What are oboes like to play? Don't think I've ever even seen one.

I got a chance to play a bari a while ago. I swear it's almost as tall as me Shocked

I play tenor but my dad has an alto. I tried to play the alto and maybe tab out some Capdown stuff but I couldn't. It's like being a hunchback and the G never came out right (although that's probably the sax itself not the design).

i bought a plastic reed once.. what a load of shit!

it made a horrible sound, felt really weird on my lips, cost 3 times as much as a normal read, and broke on its first use.

i use rico's always, vandorans don't seem to have the same 'bite'
