Help!... political UK ska bands? Empty Help!... political UK ska bands?

Post by sian Mon May 11, 2009 8:47 pm

Hey all! Got a cheeky question / favour to ask if you lot wouldn't mind helping me out...

I'm writing my dissertation on politics in 20th century Jamaican popular music, and how this has been incorporated into contemporary underground music in the UK

    sooooo..
i'm trying to think of as many political ska / reggae / ska-punk / dubby (etc) UK bands as possible, and if anyone can think of a few to help me out that'd be ace!

Off the top of my head i've already got:
    King Blues
    SB6
    Suicide Bid
Capdown (i know they're not around atm, but contemporary enough)
    Asian Dub foundation
    King Prawn
    The Skints

    Cheeeers! Very Happy

    Hmm, how about...

    Pama International
    Rebelation
    Captain Black No Stars
    Dirty Revolution
    Resolution 242

...or, for that matter, just about any band on Do The Dog Records (as all of the above appear to be/have been).

    culture shock and citizen fish.

Culture shock have real simple and to the point lyrics that are still quite clever, a band I like alot, and they play their ska-punk in a quite unique way, if you haven't heard them I'd advise you to give them a listen, some of my favourite songs would be Civilization street, color TV, and catching flies!

and well citizen fish i'm guessing you'd know already.

You probably want to also look at Stand Out Riot - BNP and Random Hand - Tear Down if you have it.

Tear Down is about racism though, right? I miss the choreographed side to sideness that song provided.

Tear Down is about things being preconceived about people because of where they're from, not quite racism. Ie, not being able to make a point about stuff happening in a city because you live in the country, etc

    What about Milk?

Also, what's "In" about? I can only understand a couple of words in the entire song.

Milk is anti-racist, yeah. 'In' is about a kid going to a party and having a weird internal monologue with his paranoia...bit of a weird one that Very Happy
