    Punk/Ska Covers Empty Punk/Ska Covers

Post by ScaredOfPoo Wed May 27, 2009 12:45 am

Something i've always enjoyed about Punk/Ska is the covers that seem to come out. So what's your favourites?

    A couple of mine
"Talkin' About Revolution" (Tracey Chapman)- Niteblind
"Crazy" (Seal) - Me First & The Gimmie Gimmies
"In The Ghetto" (Elvis) - some german punk band, I've forgotten the name of.
"Believe" (Cher Cover) - Duncan's Divas
"Rockafella Skank" (Fat Boy Slim) - Snuff
"Your Love" (The outfield) - Less Than Jake
"I Melt With You" (erm, I forget) - Good Riddance
    "S.O.S." (ABBA) - Mad Caddies i think.
"99 Red Balloons" (Nena) - Goldfinger

Punk/Ska covers just bring back good memories of listening to them in the common room with my buddy nearly 10 years ago.

    EDIT:
I forgot about Snuff's cover of "Sounds of the underground" (Girls Aloud) and Lars Frederikson & the Bastard's cover of "To Have, Have Not" (Billy Bragg)

I love the 99 Red Balloons cover! There's also an Ultimate Showdown ska cover floating round the internets somewhere. And a Scooby Doo one Very Happy

You've got your whole album of 'Greased' by Less Than Jake don't forget, featuring the likes of Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee and We Go Together.

I've seen Grown At Home/Advantage do a cover of Boys Are Back in town a few times too.

Funny thing about the Greased album is that I heard "Sandra Dee" and didn't realise it was a cover.... I was never a big fan of musicals.

EDIT: I've also remembered "Never Gonna Give You Up" (Rick Astley) by Peter & The Test Tube Babies, excellent stuff.

I actually have a playlist on iTunes. I was going to turn it into a 2 CD album. One CD would have the covers, the other would have the originals in the same track order. I tried not to fill it with Gimme Gimme songs, that was hard.

Does anyone know who did the punk cover to Ghostbusters? My mate and I have spent years trying to find out.

Yeah I've heard that one, it's good. I think Five Iron Frenzy do a cover of an abba song, can't remember which one though.

It's Mamma Mia, it's awesome but I don't think they ever released it as anything other than a B-side. I can't find a good quality recording of it : ( They do 'it's not unusual' as well, which is pretty cool.

I'm a real sucker for ska cover songs though, just love 'em. I'm really looking forward to Streetlight Manifesto's '99 songs of the revolution' (as long as they actually use their horns, unlike that cover of Linoleum they do - a short solo at the end doesn't count as using horns IMO). My favourites would probably be the Final Countdown cover by Furillo and YMCA by The Skunks.

I force my band to do a few, you can hear our ska versions of The Turtles' 'Happy Together' and Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' on our myspace (www.myspace.com/jermzska).

    That's the one!
My iPod is in my car and I could't remember. Well done you.

I don't think I've heard a ska cover and thought 'No, actually, the original was better than that.'
    ever.

Oh, speaking of Five Iron covers, on 'Proof that the youth are revolting' they open with a very brief cover of Final Countdown which leads into 'one girl army' - it's freaking awesome. Then there's the awesome out-take of that at the end of the album where half the band starts playing that as the other half of the band starts playing 'Handbook for the sellout'. I think it's hilarious Razz

I like Come on Eileen by Save Ferris and pretty much all of That Should Cover It by [spunge].

I used to think spunge's cover of Santeria was better than the original but then I got off the shit and cleaned myself up.

I also recently discovered Randal Grave's "Like To Do Girlie Stuff Sometimes" album which is full of covers of female band's songs. Kinda like Duncan Redmond's (of Snuff and Billy No Mates fame) Duncan's Divas band.

I somehow never heard Come on Eileen until after hearing Save Ferris' version. That was amusing when first hearing the original.

Haha, I just gave this a listen, that's hilarious. Here comes the sun is like my girlfriend's favourite song, this will amuse her greatly Razz

What about 'why can't we be friends' by Smash Mouth? Love that in spite of the fact that the whole song is like 5 words.

Ha! I know i'd be stealing the idea from The Simpsons but if I was ever in a competitive sport, "Why Can't We Be friends" by SmashMouth would be my theme song.
