I for one think he's amazing, a brilliant entertainer, and whether what he does is just mind games, I still find him amazing, whether it was russian rullete, tricking someone into taking paper slips for jewlery worth thousands or predicting the lottery, I honestly think this guy has the power to take over the world.
I havnt seen that much of him but what i have seen is pure entertainment. Hes also realy normal unlike many others in his profession, who try to put on the whole "mysterious" act, which can get very annoying
derren brown pulls it off better, and aside from initials, you can't really compare them. i watched the lottery thing yesterday with niall, and all the way through he was tutting and sighing and complaining about how it's a complete farse. i don't mind skepticism, it's very healthy, but to walk into it with a mindset of this is a complete farse and i refuse to acknowledge that anything he has to say as worthwhile is just as bad as somebody who wouldn't question him.
that said, the main assumption that the whole thing was based around was that you get truer random numbers from compiling a list of people's guesses is true, but it works under the assumption that truer random numbers have a greater chance of appearing. This is obviously not the case, and 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 have just as much chance of occurring as any other.
i reckon this was an attempt by camelot to try and get people interested in the lottery again. predicting a truly random event is impossible, it's more likely a camera trick
i wached it whilst drunk in st andrews (truly the hight of st andrews night life and quite enjoyed it, didnt mater if it was true or not it held my atention for an hour or so. good tv imho
there is clearly some form of trick, but derren brown always stresses that he uses manipulation and trickery and isn psychic or a magician or wahtever.
I think the guys quality, i just wouldn't want to actually meet him as he'd be all manipulativey. The best one was when he got the guy to think he was in a real life zombie game!
I liked the bit on the lottery show when he said that the bonus ball was for gays and women. And I love how much he loves oxtail soup.
I was generally quite nervous for the stompy cup guy throughout the whole thing. although why in the hell did he agree to do the last few that were left?
I don't know whether it's his smug demeanor, the way he's marketed by Channel 4 almost as the most powerful psychic on planet earth or whether it's just his face.
I know full well that Channel 4 don't go around referring to him as Derren "Psychic" Brown, but it's always implied that there's something beyond simple tricks, slights of hand and good editing.

Reel Big Moose wrote:its called marketing I believe.
That was my exact first point.
The way that he's marketed annoys me the most. As something he's quite clearly not.
He's made out to be all spooky, mysterious and powerful on all adverts and DVDs etc, when in fact he's quite clearly none of these things.
Yeah, he actually sells him self as a mind manipulator, not a phsycic, which would be getting into your mind (as in being able to manipulate people decisions), hense the title.
The thing is (according to screenwipe) he's not allowed to do any of that mind control shit through your TV but his latest program is being advertised as exactly that.
