Charlie Brooker's Gameswipe Empty Charlie Brooker's Gameswipe

Post by NotRich Tue Aug 18, 2009 2:41 am

Seen as this entire Entertainment forum is dominated by games threads, you'll all be pleased to know that Charlie Brooker is following on from the successes of Screenwipe and Newswipe and tackling the Games industry in his next series.

I know this could be fairly old news to some, but he's brought up the topic recently on his Twitter, so it seems as though we're close to it starting up.

His latest update was: "Worst game cutscenes of all time, anyone? Don't tweet suggestions to me, but to gameswipe at zeppotron dot com."

What do you reckon? Is this gonna be as good as the other formats? Is there enough material there? What games do we reckon he's going to love or rip into?

He's got some kind of wipe related OCD.

I wonder if its related to his mother?

He started out as a games journalist so this isn't a huge leap into some unknown territory for him.
I reckon I'll probably enjoy it more than screenwipe by a mile because I play and read a lot more about video games/video games news as opposed to watching a lot of TV.

He'll have a hard time beating Yahtzee Croshaw but I like the way Charlie Brooker goes deeper into the relevant industries. It was interesting to know what goes on behind the scenes in the world of television.

I expect Charlie Brooker's take on things to be an entirely different kettle o' fish.

I don't expect that he'll be as negative about things, although I suppose when he ventures into criticisms it'll be along the same lines.

Yeah, this is being billed as a look at the games industry past, present and future as far as I know, so it's doubtful that he'll be reviewing games as such, more looking at their influence over the years.

Pretty sure he'll focus at some point on the argument over whether videogames make kids kill people. Which I expect will be a pretty good watch.

did you see the episode of Bullshit about that? I don't think they were harsh enough on Jack Thompson. Imagine how messed up somebodies mind has to be that when they hear about a school shooting, their immediate thought is "goodie, this will be good for furthering my own agenda" and driving across the country to be interviewed lying about the cause of it all.

As for gamewipe, i'm a bit unsure. I don't watch tv and I don't really keep up on the news so I appreciated the shows as being some kind of quick catch-up. I can't imagine a 30 minute program doing more than skimming over something that i already know a good deal about.

I've just watched this on iplayer. Pretty good although a lot of it was basically just a recap on computer games in general. I was expecting a little more behind the scenes stuff like he did with screenwipe. Maybe in a future episode?

Watching it got me thinking. When you load a game up on a playstation, xbox or whatever, why does it insist that you press the start button to get to the menu screen? It's obvious that you want to go there and there's no other option but to press start or quit the game anyway.

i figured that the first epsiode is going to be a quick blast through everything and then future episodes will concentrate on one of the different things, like first person shooters or jack thompson etc

I can't believe that 50 Cent game actually exists. Oh wait, yes I can. The general public are morans.

That spelling error was obviously for comedic effect.

Yeah, I don't own any games consoles, and only one PC game I never play (Rollercoaster Tycoon), yet I fully enjoyed this!!
