    "Free" Music Empty "Free" Music

Post by Harvey Mon May 11, 2009 1:06 am

ok, i'm probably gonna get minused the hell out of on the streetlight steve cool-o-meter, but i would like to ask whether people reckon a thread containing links to sites with links to free material would be good to have on this forum. Obviously this is at the mods' discression and i wouldn't go against it, and obviously bands use this forum who no doubt would have strong opinions on the subject...

but i'm asking because i don't genuinely know what everyone thinks about "free" music. In my opinion i don't like getting too much for free, but i'm pretty skint and there's a lot of stuff that i would never have listened to or been able to listen to without doing it.

    sound good or sound bad?

HMMMMM, this all depends, if its not leagle then don't do it, however bands such as defiance, ohio and bomb the music industry have their albums for free download on their websites, to which i'd see no problem, or if websites such as myspace, or punknews.org are streaming albums with the bands consent then that would be ok?

mmmm, not sure about the legality of all the sites, most have links to mediafire and rapidshare etc. I guess it'll pay to play safe and besides i don't wanna get anyone into trouble! as for stuff i'm totally sure about, this place has some absolute gems, community records is kinda like quote unquote in that it provides free stuff but allows for donations

stuck lucky, and fatter than albert (don't whatever you do let the name put you off) are both brilliant bands but there are lots of others worth checking out on this label

Im totally for this, most record label sites have some nice little free tracks from various bands to download so those kind of things are amazing in my book! always a good way of trying before you buy into a band.

    http://www.moonskaworld.com/musicfiles.html

is a good one, i used to know loadsa places to get free tracks and the like, i'll post more up when i can remember.

    Blame it on Edd

excellent politically charged ska/punk from portsmouth broke up in 2006 whose members popped up on the skacommunity every now and then have made a lot of their recordings free on their myspace and its very worth checking out - especially "original sin" and, if you can get your hands on it, "milk the world".

I love free music. I have a playlist on my iPod called 'Free Music' which I put promotional tracks from bands and stuff in. The last album I got for free was Grown at Home's Assemble and it's brilliant. When I find the link on the ol' Munity I'll post it up.

I don't like to use bittorrent for downloading music anymore. The fact being that I don't really listen to multi-millionaire bands and it just isn't fair on the small guys.

Personally i'm a bad music thief most of the time anyway, i'm not sure legally how it stands posting it though. I guess if they can post it on a public blog and not get sued you'll be alright posting it here. Interesting to see a coupla bands i've heard of but not checked out, Chiggy Chone from Sheffield will definitely be getting a listen.

I'm always shocked when i'm reminded that Rich from Mike TV used to be in Blame It On Edd. They were so angry and he's so posh, haha.

OH, and if anyone would like to download Kickback UK's last EP for freeee, go here - http://www.last.fm/music/Kickback+UK/The+Easy+Way+Out+EP

I'm not really a massive fan of that album, but it's cool that they've put it up for free download. Shame they didn't put the Sandwich EP up as well, awesome cd!

Only if the music has been made free by the bands, none of this blog sharing malarky. Especially with UK underground bands, any support is more than needed!

Yeah, Random Hand need cd money to plough into making wizard sticks.

Yeah, seriously though, Dimmers is pretty much right. I'd say stuff like that is cool maybe if the band has split up or if the release is no longer available to buy. Obviously stuff like the new Random Hand album, available here - http://www.rebelalliancerecordings.com/randomhand.cfm - should not be illegally downloaded.

'Skint?' is a project set up by Toonteen Industries (www.myspace.com/toonteenindustries).

This encourages viewers of the blog to download tracks, EPs, and albums, FREE & Legal from their favourite local bands.

To join, basically send the track(s) you wish to be available for download to:
